4 Ways to Prepare for your Technical Interview

Once you have passed through the initial phone (i.e. screening) interview, your next step is a series of face-to-face interviews. However, as an IT professional, you will also have the technical interview to deal with.

The good news is that once you make it to the technical “round”, you have been more than likely placed on the short list of candidates. These interviews are expensive and time-consuming, and they simply will not be given to every applicant.

You must prepare all your interviews by updating and focusing on your resume as well as polishing your appearance and your professional demeanor.  However, the technical interview requires an additional set of preparatory steps.

Here are four tips to help you:

  1. Be ready to whiteboard – Many companies give logic problems or coding/ programming tests as homework, in an effort to further weed through the applicant pool.  However, be prepared to whiteboard during the interview.  Many people need to practice a bit to master whiteboarding.  Talk out loud so that the interviewer can follow your thought process and determine when you are outlining with pseudo code vs. writing actual code.  Ask questions to make sure you fully understand what you are being asked to do, and openly discuss your approach.
  2. Be articulate and communicate – An interview is really a selling opportunity.  You are simply selling yourself.  In order to sell, you must be able to communicate well – both verbally and non-verbally.  It is not enough to have the skills and competencies that an employer is looking for, you must effectively articulate the fact that you have the skills and competencies that the employer is looking for.
  3. Align your skills and competencies with the job description – The job description is the biggest resource you have.  If done correctly, this one document can provide you with the understanding regarding technologies used, competencies demanded and skills needed.  Spend some time with the job description and work to align your own accomplishments, skills and experience with each point.
  4. Practice – Whether you have a friend ask you mock interview questions or you practice whiteboarding in front of the mirror, you should practice.  Interviewing is a skill; however, it is not something that is done every single day …at least it should not be.  So to improve and enhance a much needed, but little used skill you have to practice.
