So here you are, at a crossroads …the proverbial path not taken. Everything you have ever done has led you to where you are right now. Perhaps you are a new graduate ready to land your first real job. Maybe you’re looking to revamp and resurrect your career after some time off. Or maybe you just feel that your skills are being underutilized in your current position, and you’re longing for a better opportunity.
Whatever the reason, you probably have several feelings emerging. You may find this time to be exciting, stressful, scary, or intimidating, and you likely feel a little overwhelmed as you ask yourself, how do I navigate the vast unknown that we call the job search?
As the owner of a multimillion-dollar recruiting firm based in Scottsdale, Arizona, I have more than 17 years of experience as a career strategist coach and recruiter for corporations throughout the country.
I graduated with a degree in psychology and remember feeling at a loss as to how I wanted to apply my first degree and find my first job. My goal is to help you sidestep some of the speed bumps you may encounter in your job search and provide the tools to quickly hone in on what your talents are, what you enjoy doing, and how to create an online presence that attracts the right company to land your perfect job.
The Right Attitude is Key
At the heart of any job-seeking discussion, I have with our candidates at The Finders is attitude. Remember, the feelings I mentioned you may be having. I mentioned feelings of excitement first, but I would be willing to bet that if I asked you to list your feelings about a job search, exciting wouldn’t top your list.
Here’s a simple pro-tip for a way to re-frame the way you think about your job search: Conjure up a more exciting mental picture of a job search and think of it along the lines of a scavenger hunt. And with proper planning and execution, this scavenger hunt is going to lead you to the treasure chest of opportunity, success, accomplishment, and money.
How to get Started Re-framing your Job Search:
- Take a moment to start a journal page you can access daily.
- Write down the first four treasures that come to mind when it comes to your next job.
- Now let’s dive deeper–ask yourself, what else do I think of when I think of finding my treasure job? Write those qualities down too.
- Share this list with your recruiter at The Finders. Or if you need one, start the process here.
I look forward to seeing the jewels you find at the end of your treasure hunt!
